Step-by-step walkthrough

1. 01

   Apply to the academy and choose payment

   Speak to Metheus and apply. At Job Level 50, confirm the application for a fee waiver, then proceed to Claytos.

   At Job Levels 40–49, pay 70,000 Zeny or submit 1 Old Magicbook and 1 Necklace of Wisdom. Either method immediately unlocks the exam.

   For the discount, carry at most 43,210 Zeny and choose The fee is much too expensive. followed by Please...is there any way? Receive a random set A–C and return with the items and 30,000 Zeny.

   After receiving a discount set, carrying both the book and necklace makes the NPC accept those first. Carrying at least 70,000 Zeny makes him charge the normal fee before considering the discount, even with a complete set. Carry 30,000–69,999 Zeny when submitting a discount set.

   Entrance exam rules

   Claytos assigns one of three exams with 20 questions worth 5 points each. You need at least 80 points, or 16 correct answers, on both your first attempt and retries.

   Speak to the same NPC to retry after failing. You do not pay the application fee again. The numbers below are answers scored by this exam, rather than verified skill values for every game system.

6. 06

   Three combat rounds

   Visit Hermes and choose to begin. He sends you to job_sage 50,154. Speak to the Test Helper and join the Waiting Room chat to enter one at a time.

   Round 1: defeat 8 Grade F and 8 Grade D, 16 total, within 3 minutes. Round 2: defeat 24 monsters named after subjects within a separate 3-minute limit.

   Round 3: defeat 1 Academic Probation within 1 minute. Four other monsters named Absent, Cheating or Being Late are not completion targets. Defeating Academic Probation passes the round, then the announcement sequence returns you.

   The first two rounds time out at 183 seconds and send you out at 184. The final round times out at 60 and sends you out at 61. Death or timeout requires returning to Hermes and restarting from round 1. Your written exam result remains saved.

   Receive your subject assignment

   Return to Hermes after passing. He assigns one random subject: History with Saphien, Biology with Lucius, or Physics with Aebecee.

   Complete only your assigned subject. Each route ends with a Book representing your thesis. Keep it for the Dean to inspect. Completing all three subjects is unnecessary.

   History · study Yggdrasil

   Speak to Saphien. If you say you know Yggdrasil, choose It’s the source of life in the world. He asks you to carry 1 Yggdrasilberry, Yggdrasil Seed or Yggdrasil Leaf and return for the lecture.

   The tree item is not consumed. A leaf or an incorrect introductory answer prompts dialogue about losing 10 points, but this does not determine thesis completion. After the lecture, bring 1 each of the five writing materials and speak again.

   Choose all seven thesis passages: serpent around the ocean → A giant snake Yormungandr.; realm of giants → Utgard, where titans live,; realm of humans → Midgard, where humans live,; realm of gods → Asgard, where gods live.; Yggdrasil → A giant ash tree.; three roots → Asgard, Jotunnheim, Niflheim.; Seed effect → can restore half of total HP and SP.

   Every passage must be correct. A mistake requires a new writing material set. Passing awards 1 Book.

9. 09

   Biology · fish and insects

   Speak to Lucius for one of three fish sets. Bring 5 of each assigned type and speak again. The items serve as evidence and are not consumed.

   For the fish similarity question, choose They possess water property. or They are fishes. For the suitable spell, choose Lightening Bolt. or Thunder Storm. Both listed answers are accepted for each question. Other answers prompt criticism but still allow the insect assignment.

   Next, receive one of four insect sets. Bring 5 of each type and hear the lesson; the items are not consumed. He then requests 1 each of five writing materials.

   Submit the writing materials and select the single available choice on each of six pages. There are no incorrect choices. Completion awards 1 Book.

    Physics · three deliveries

    Speak to Aebecee and deliver 30 Stone. They are consumed, and you receive 1 Crystal Blue, 1 Green Live and 1 Wind of Verdure.

    He requests 50 Crystal Arrow, 50 Stone Arrow and 50 Arrow of Wind. Buy them or ask an Archer to help prepare them. Bring the complete set for the lecture; the arrows are consumed.

    Next, deliver 1 Holy Water and hear another lecture. It is consumed. Then prepare 1 each of five writing materials.

    Physics · write the thesis

    Submit the writing materials and select ten consecutive passages. Every choice is accepted with no score deduction. A coherent recommended sequence starts: Water, Earth, Fire and Wind. → Magic with wind property is strong against water → However, that does not work on the opposite case → You must apply different types of property by the situation or place.

    Continue with You never know the limits of magic → It is not suggested to be too addicted to magic spells. → Only pertinent uses of magic, as well as rest → will guarantee you a safe battle. → Forming a party with people of different classes → is considered the best way to ready for battle.

    Complete all choices to receive 1 Book. No new material set is needed for a retry.

12. 12

    Take the Book to the Dean

    All subjects finish with Dean Kayron in another building. Carry at least 1 Book (1550), reach Job Level 40 or higher and spend all Skill Points.

    The Dean inspects your Book and changes you to Sage without consuming it. There is no additional item or Zeny reward at class change. Losing the Book does not reopen thesis writing with the professor, so keep it until the quest is complete.
